Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton will hope to replicate the performance of previous year’s Styrian Grand Prix in which both the races were dominated by the Mercedes. Bottas winning the Opening Race of the season which was filled with controversy.
Lewis Hamilton was handed a 5-second penalty for pushing Alex Albon off the track which resulted in Lando Norris producing the fastest final lap securing a podium finish. Hamilton was frustrated and agitated with this decision.
Following week he led the race from the pole position and secured crucial points for Mercedes in the Constructors Championship, another remarkable finish followed when Sergio Perez hit Albon fighting for fourth, broke his front wing, and Norris overtook Daniel Ricciardo, Lance Stroll, and then Perez into the final corner to snatch fifth.
F1 Styrian GP Red Bull Ring
The race track itself is only 4.318KM/ 2.683MI making it one of the shortest F1 tracks which often leads to tight qualifying sessions with four of the last seven pole positions claimed at the RedBull Ring having been decided by less than a tenth of a second.
Lewis Hamilton has had a disappointing start to the season where he has struggled to establish any forward momentum and the same goes with Mercedes.
Hamilton trails Max Verstappen by 12 points and Redbull lead the Constructors Championship by 37 points. This year MIdfield has also come closer becuase of the new rules and regulations which has enabled one of the closest F1 season ever.
Styrian Grand Prix Circuit
A special feature of this race track is its continuously changing inclines and the difference in altitudes as you progress through the lap. Drivers will face maximum uphill slopes of 12% and maximum downhill slopes of 9.3%.
In 2020, Carlos Sainz racing for Mclaren recorded the fastest lap at the RedBull Ring with a time of 1:05.619. It will be interesting to watch the drivers fighting in 71 laps where we will witness some of the fastetst laps.
In the opening double header of the previous season, 9 cars had to retire becuase of collisions and engine malfunction. It will be interesting to see how many cars can get past the finish line after 71 laps.
