Stuart Broad And Shardul Thakur On The Injury Bed Ahead Of The 2nd England vs India Lord’s Test Match, James Anderson Doubtful

Shardul Thakur and Stuart Broad have suffered injury on Wednesday and ruled out of the 2nd India vs England test match at Lord’s on Friday

While England’s Stuart Broad tore his right calf muscle, Shardul Thakur sustained a hamstring injury. However, unlike Broad who will have to miss the entire Test series, Shardul has only been ruled out of the second test match. That being so, things look uglier for England with James Anderson also probably suffering from a tight quad. Read on to know how these injuries happened.

How Did Stuart Broad And Shardul Thakur Get Sidelined With Their Injury

England’s senior fast bowler Stuart Broad sustained the calf injury during a training session on Wednesday, ahead of the second test match which begins on Thursday, 12 August. This would’ve been his milestone 150th test. He was warming-up on a Tuesday afternoon at Lord’s when he slipped while doing a light jog. He then, underwent an MRI scan in London the next day, which revealed a tear in his right calf.

England will have to make quite a few changes with Stuart Broad now out and even James Anderson undergoing a thigh problem. The team has never played a Test without either Broad or Anderson out since October 2016.

As for India’s Shardul Thakur, skipper Virat Kohli confirmed the former’s hamstring injury during a press conference on Wednesday, also saying that he will recover by the third test. Thirteen overs down in England’s second innings during the first test match, doubts had started surfacing over Shardul’s fitness. He was ruled out after spending time at the gym with India’s physiotherapist Nitin Patel and trainer Nick Webb.

Who Will Replace Stuart Broad And Shardul Thakur For The England vs India 2nd Test Match At Lord’s Cricket Stadium

With both Anderson and Broad out, England have called up Lancashire seamer Saqib Mahmood, as announced by the England and Wales Cricket Board in a statement. Saqib has played over seven ODIs and nine T20Is for England, out of which he has taken 21 wickets.

While England will have to find a replacement for the entire series, India only has to do so for the second test since Shardul will be back in the third. The Men in Blue can either pick up Ravichandran Ashwin as the second spinning all-rounder, or a fourth seamer in Ishant Sharma or Umesh Yadav.
