For the Giants, Shepard’s absence has raised a lot of concerns.
A question-filled Giants receiving room is shaken by Shepard’s departure. When healthy, former first-round selection Kadarius Toney has struggled with injuries and limited playing time, and Kenny Golladay has recently been the focus of trade speculations because of his bad production and expensive contract.
The Giants may experience a few setbacks as a result of Shepard’s absence in the future, but they will certainly miss his consistent performance and experienced influence in the locker room.
Sterling Shepard Contract details
Shepard reorganized his deal in March, lowering the final two years of his four-year, $41 million extension (with a cap hit of well almost $26 million over 2022 and 2023) signed just before 2019 to one year at a lower wage with bonuses – possibly saving Shepard from being a cap casualty, despite the fact that his release would have saved $4.5 million but left a large number of dead cap.
The seventh-year receiver from Oklahoma was the Giants’ second-round pick in 2016 and was arguably the Giants’ best receiver from 2016-18 to earn that renewal, but he’s been hampered by injuries since, making an appearance in just 29 of 49 games from 2019-21.
