Estela Dominguez, a Spanish cycling champion, tragically passed away Thursday night after being struck by a truck while practicing. The event occurred as the adolescent was riding her bicycle in Salamanca, northwest Spain, where she had aspirations of competing in the Tour de France Femme.
Emergency personnel reached out to the 19-year-old at the scene, but they were unable to save her life.
Official statement
Following her passing, the Sopela Women’s Team issued a statement expressing shock and sadness. “We have discovered with great sorrow that our cyclist Estela Dominguez passed away this afternoon as a result of a hit-and-run accident while she was practising. We stand behind the family during these horrible times. Peace be with you,” the statement said.
In a statement, the Spanish cycling organisation said: “From the RFEC, we greatly lament Estela Dominguez’s passing. We send our deepest sympathies to her family, friends, and teammates. Spanish cycling as a whole is in grief. Always be courteous to cyclists on the road. Each bicycle saves a life.”

The teenage athlete received praise from renowned Spanish cyclist Alejandro Valverde, who pours tribute in memory of Estela. He asserted that there are no words that are appropriate in the face of something terrible news like this. He further expressed his love and support to Estela Dominguez’s family and friends, especially to her father Juan Carlos Dominguez, with whom he used to ride in the peloton when he was younger.
