Sonam Malik, the youngest Indian female wrestler who got a chance to showcase her talent at the Tokyo Olympics is unfortunately not out of the race. Sonam Malik is presently 19 years old and a gold medal holder in the National Games and the Cadet Wrestling championships.

She has currently been served a notice by the Wrestling Federation of India owing to indiscipline with Vinesh Phogat being banned by the WFI for the same antics.

Her father’s name is Rajinder Malik and her mother’s name is Meena Malik. Sonam’s father is an erstwhile wrestler who grappled in local competitions. Sonam Malik has a cousin who is a local wrestler too. She took inspiration for taking up wrestling after seeing from her father Rajinder, and her cousin.

They had made her influence to chase the sport. Sonam got enrolled at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Sports Complex where Sonam attained training from her coach Ajmer Malik. Firstly she used to practice wrestling on the ground due to lack of proper infrastructure and the academy didn’t have mats for practice too. She would have to practice even on the roads in case the ground got muddy due to rain.

Sonam Malik Wrestling Career

At a very young age, she had shown her capability as an amazing wrestler. Under the instructions of Ajmer Malik, her wrestling coach, her career started taking shape. Sonam had taken part in numerous junior district and state competitions and won several medals for her state.

In January of 2021, Sonam Malik won her maiden senior national title in the category of 62kg by beating Olympic Bronze medalist Sakshi Malik at the Senior Women National Wrestling Championships held at Agra.

She attained her international career breakthrough in the year 2017 when she achieved the Gold in World School Games. That year  Malik won the Bronze at the Cadet Asian Wrestling Championship which was her life’s biggest win, a Gold medal also at Cadet World Wrestling Championship.

In the year 2018, she achieved the Bronze at the Cadet Asian Wrestling Championship. Later that year, Malik failed to defend her World Cadet Gold medal as she attained a Bronze medal after losing the semi-finals. In the following year after winning two medals back to back. She got the second Gold medal in the Cadet World Wrestling Championship.

In the year 2021, Malik broke records by becoming the youngest woman wrestler from India to clear for the Olympics in the year 2021, Tokyo Olympics. She set her Olympic seat in the category of 62kg after qualifying the final at the Asian Olympic Qualifier tournament.
