Just recently, Shubman registered his 6th ODI century in 92 balls against Australia on Sunday, September 24.

Shubmnan scored 104 runs off 97 balls during India’s second ODI match against Australia, including four sixes and six boundaries.

Shubman Gill scores 6th ODI century

Gill scored the impressive feat at the Holkar International Stadium, Indore. He was taking part in the 2nd match of the ongoing India vs Australia ODI Series. In the match, Gill shared a 200-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer, who hit 105 off 90 balls. The Punjab-born, right-handed batsman eventually got knocked out after mistiming his final shot. As Shubman hit the ball, it flew up high before Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey eventually caught it.

Following the score, Gill has further added to his record for the most runs in the ongoing calendar year. So far in 2023, Gill has already registered an impressive 1230 runs across 20 ODIs, while not other batter has completed even 1,000 runs this year. His numbers include one double century, four centuries, and five half-centuries. The closest behind him is UAE’s Asif Khan, who has scored 934 runs in 24 ODIs so far, followed by Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka with 819 runs in 20 games.

Shubman Gill looking to break runs records

As things stand, legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for most ODI runs in a single calendar year. Tendulkar scored shocking 1894 runs across 34 ODIs back in 1998, which included nine tons. Meanwhile, Gill who is still a rising player, has gathered 1917 runs across 35 ODIs, which included one double ton, five centuries, and nine fifties.


The Indian opener will be looking to continue increasing his score in the upcoming third ODI against Australia. Interestingly, Gill currently needs just 83 runs to break the fastest 2000 runs set by South Africa’s Hashim Amla. Hashim previously set the record in 40 innings.

Aside from ODI internationals, Gill has gathered 230 runs in five games in test Cricket, with at an average rate of 32.86. This includes a century (128 off 135) against Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Meanwhile, in T20Is, Gill has managed to score 304 runs in 11 innings, which include one century and one fifty, along with a best score of 126 runs against New Zealand. So far this year, in 2023, Shubman has scored a total of 1764 runs.

Former India cricketer Suresh Raina recently predicted that Shubman Gill could go on to break India captain Rohit Sharma’s record. He shared:

What Rohit Sharma did in the 2019 World Cup; Gill could do the same for India this year. He’ll get 50 overs to bat, so it’s a takeoff point for his batting. I think he’s a born leader and he shows that in his game.”

He added how Shubmna will become one of the most important players for India at the upcoming World Cup. He concluded by saying how he will be alongside stars like Virat Kohli after the upcoming World Cup and how people would be talking about him more often.
