Following the controversy surrounding the letters exchanged between Luis Rubiales and Gerard Pique, it seems Sergio Ramos is now the target of criticism. Ramos begged for “Rubi’s support” to win the Ballon d’Or in a series of discussions that were made public yesterday between the president of the Spanish Football Federation and the centre-back.

El Confidencial published further exchanges between Ramos and Rubiales today, adding a new chapter to the affair. Ramos called Rubiales on his phone after Barcelona’s 3-1 victory against Leganes in 2019 to voice his displeasure with some of the decisions made.

“Rubi, the VAR situation is starting to worry us a lot, especially with Barca. It’s a complete disgrace, and the refs lack the guts to call it. Did you witness [Luis] Suarez’s foul on the goalkeeper that resulted in a 2-1 score? This is a joke.

The discussion was documented by Mundo Deportivo, as Rubiales responded the following day. “Good afternoon, Sergio. You are the captain of the national team, you have hundreds or thousands of games behind you and better than anyone you understand that sometimes there are different opinions about a fact.

“As you well know, I don’t get involved in these matters. We work day-to-day so that the refereeing body has more tools and their efficacy improves.” he further said, “Very politically correct, congratulations. I hoped for a personal opinion about the Barca thing from yesterday because it’s a scandal and now they are destined to win the league one way or another. I understand your stance. A big hug.”

The next day, the former Real Madrid captain seems to tone down his remarks, but these most recent disclosures just raise more concerns regarding the close friendship that several players had with Rubiales.

Perhaps it should be framed as a problem that separates the two biggest canines from the rest of the pack rather than as an injustice or a conflict between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Ramos was signed by Real Madrid for €27 million in the summer of 2005, a record for a Spanish defender. During Florentino PĂ©rez’s first term as president of Real, he was the only player from Spain brought in and last year, it was revealed that Ramos had agreed to a two-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain on July 8, 2021.
