Sergio Perez’s first win in F1 in 2020

Perez, who has been racing in F1 since 2011, won his first grand Prix in 2020. The Sakhir Grand Prix was a new event for F1, held on the outer Bahrain layout as the sport attempted to fit in as many races as possible during the pandemic season.

Starting from P5, Perez was thrown into a spin by Charles Leclerc at Turn 4 on the first lap as chaos ensued. He finished the first lap in last place as the team pitted him for repairs following the contact.

As Mercedes imploded, he quickly returned to the points in the RP20 and rose to the podium positions. George Russell pitted under a safety car in place of the COVID positive Lewis Hamilton, but the team accidentally fitted Valtteri Bottas’ tyres.

This is against the rules, so Russell pitted once more for his own tyres. Bottas’ race was also delayed as he replaced the old, worn-out hard tyres he was already running on.

As the pack grew larger, Perez took the lead. Russell later suffered a puncture while pursuing leader Perez. It was Perez’s first victory in 190 Grand Prix appearances, as well as Racing Point’s first and final. On the podium with him were Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll.

Chaos provides the second win

Sergio Perez won his second Formula One race for Red Bull at the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, after losing his Racing Point seat to Sebastian Vettel. Perez was second to Max Verstappen in Baku when the Red Bull team leader’s tyre blew at 200mph. Perez took the lead after the safety car and red flag period for debris, and the race was decided by a two-lap shootout.

He started alongside Hamilton on the front row, but at the restart, the Mercedes knocked a button on the steering wheel, locked up, and went off at Turn 1. Hamilton finished 15th, marking a watershed moment in the championship.

Perez beat out Sebastian Vettel and Pierre Gasly.
