As the Messi makeover of the squad gets underway, legendary Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets became the first of Lionel Messi’s buddies to join with Major League Soccer club Inter Miami. A few minutes after football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano tweeted the news, Inter Miami verified it.
With his contract with Barcelona ready to expire, Busquets, 34, was free to sign with any team. He selected Inter Miami, where he will likely soon be reunited with former teammate Messi, whose contract signing has not yet been made public but the team owner has notified the media that they have agreed terms.
When will Sergio Busquets make his Inter Miami debut?
Busquets deal is only scheduled to go into effect on July 1. The midfielder’s final match for Barcelona was on May 28, and if his summer break is almost over, he could be ready to start pre-season training in Miami.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Busquets, 34, will pen a two-and-a-half year deal with Miami but nothing is known about his salary or jersey number right now.
Inter Miami will want to make sure Busquets is physically prepared to join a league in full midseason swing. Players normally go through two to three weeks of preseason. According to reports, Messi will make his Leagues Cup debut against Cruz Azul on July 21. Busquets may decide to hold off till then to make his debut.
But with the following games scheduled, Busquets may see his first taste of play before that goal date of July 21 if his preseason training advances faster than Messi’s.

Can Inter Miami qualify for the play-offs?
Inter Miami obviously needs the aid to show up as soon as possible. Miami is eight points away from the last playoff slot and in last place in the Eastern Conference at the midway mark of the season.
Although there is still plenty of time to make up ground, the Herons may not have enough league games left to save their season if Messi and Busquets take some time to adjust. Each team competes in 34 regular-season games, with the top 18 of the remaining 29 teams advancing to the postseason to decide the MLS champion.
