US Open 2021 is seeing the big names drop out by the minute. After a raft of men players pulling out along with some notable names, the women’s category has seen Serena Williams withdraw from the event.
Serena Williams Decides To Skip US Open 2021 Owing To Her Ongoing Hamstring Injury
Taking to Instagram to reveal the decision she had made, Williams talked about how she didn’t want to risk aggravating her hamstring injury. Having suffered the injury in her right leg during Wimbledon earlier in the year, Williams has talked about how she wants the torn hamstring to recover fully before returning to the court.
“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring,” she wrote on Instagram.
The US Open has already seen Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem all decided to abstain from the event next week owing to injury concerns. Thiem who had defeated Alexander Zverev last year to win the marquee competition had decided to pull out owing to a wrist injury he had suffered during the Mallorca Open.
The Australian world number 6 had also gone onto give the Wimbledon a skip in lieu of the injury. In his, Nadal and Federer’s absence, Novak Djokovic is widely touted to gander his way to the revered title and with it wrap up a Calendar Grand Slam for himself with him winning all four slams in 2021 if he triumphs at the competition.
