Why Sanju Samson’s chances to represent India at the 2023 ICC World Cup are slim?
When Sanju Samson was left off of India’s starting lineup for the July 27 ODI against the West Indies, there was a lot of uproar. However, he got his chance at redemption in the second ODI and was invited to bat at third position. Although he had plenty of opportunity during the game to demonstrate his talent and declare himself eligible for the ODI World Cup 2023, the 28-year-old was only able to score nine runs off 19 balls.
Similarly, Suryakumar Yadav failed to impress owing to another lackluster performance and has managed only 19-runs from the first two games of this series. Notably, Suryakumar entered the series to redeem his status after he was dismissed in three consecutive games without scoring any runs. Unfortunately, Samson won’t be getting as many chances as Suryakumar Yadav and the star batsman has struggled to become a regular member since his debut in 2015.
How has Sanju Samson performed in recent ODI matches?
In the few chances he has had, Samson has demonstrated his talent and he would have felt more confident if he had gotten a longer run like Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, or Shubman Gill. Great players in the past were guaranteed to play in 10–12 consecutive matches without being benched, regardless of how well they performed. Samson, though, hasn’t had the same experience. The right-hander has demonstrated that this is one format in which he can excel greatly in the few ODI appearances that have been granted to him.
