The San Francisco Marathon History, Founder, And Number of Participants
The Pamakids Runners Club was in charge of planning the first San Francisco Marathon. On July 10, 1977, Reno, Nevada, cab driver Athol Barton won the first race in a timing of 2:24:59 in which only 900 people participated. With 7,231, 1983 set the event’s all-time record for marathon finishers. In the different races in 2004, there were reportedly 7,800 runners, and in 2005, there were 11,290. By 2008 and 2009, this number had climbed to almost 19,000 and 21,000, respectively. Ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes and Runner’s World columnist Bart Yasso served as the event’s hosts in 2009.
356 of the 4,873 finishers in 2005 were eligible for Boston. In 2006, 277 of the 4,021 finishers qualified. 462 runners qualified for the event in 2010, 468 runners qualified in 2011, 377 runners qualified in 2012, and 296 runners qualified for the marathon in 2016. 324 people qualified for the Boston Marathon in the 2018 edition.
San Francisco Marathon Prize Purse, All-time Winners And Race Time
Additionally, the purse has changed from year to year. Barton received a t-shirt as payment in 1977. Pete Pfitzinger received a new automobile and $5,000 when he won in 1986. There was no prize money awarded from 1999 through 2001, despite the fact that the $35,000 purse ($10,000 for first place, $5,000 for second place, and $2,500 for third place) in 1998 drew a lot of elite runners. The prize money was $10,000 from 2002 to 2004. Since 2005, no prizes have been awarded, mostly due to a lack of significant sponsors.
