Who was Ryan Mallett?

Ryan Mallett was born on June 5, 1988 and was 35 years old when he died on June 27, 2023. He  spent one season playing for the University of Michigan before moving to Arkansas, where he passed for 7,493 yards and 62 touchdowns over the course of two seasons. He led the Razorbacks to an 8-5 record and victory in the Liberty Bowl in 2009 as a redshirt sophomore for head coach Bobby Petrino, for which he was named Offensive MVP.

His greatest year was 2010, when he threw for 3,869 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while maintaining a 64.7 completion %. He was named to the second team of the SEC for the second consecutive season. He came in at number seven in the 2010 Heisman Trophy vote.

In the 2011 NFL Draft, Mallett was selected by the New England Patriots in the third round (74th overall). Because the team could never have enough quarterback depth, according to head coach Bill Belichick, Mallett was selected as one of Tom Brady’s backups.

Brady’s durability and infrequent exits from games limited Mallett to just 24 snaps as his backup in New England. Prior to the 2014 season, he was traded to the Houston Texans, where he spent portions of two seasons before being released in October 2015. He played nine games with the Texans, starting six of them. Later, he joined the Baltimore Ravens, for whom he earned two starts in eight appearances from 2015 to 2017.
