The two players had an unforgettable confrontation in a 2002 match when McAteer started for Sunderland against the illustrious Red Devils midfielder, who was sent off early for elbowing his opponent.
Once again, tensions flared as Keane went over McAteer’s career red cards and said that he wouldn’t “go so far” as to declare that they were both Republic of Ireland teammates, suggesting that McAteer “deserving” of the sharp end of his elbow.

He deserved it. I wouldn’t go that far [calling McAteer his team-mate].

In response to Keane’s remarks, McAteer stated:
Yeah [I’m tired of it]. I’d rather he came in here now, and we just go, let bygones be bygones. Let’s just be civil.
He further continued:
Or we can get in the ring for ยฃ1million each and fight it out! Eddie [Hearn], if you’re watching. Eddie Hearn, get him on the phone.
Roy, come on. You’re better than that. And I promise to stop reacting.”
