Rohit Sharma’s captaincy journey in major finals began with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Champions League T20 (CLT20). Across these tournaments, he captained his team to victory on six occasions, establishing an unblemished record.

While Rohit Sharma had previously captained India in various formats, including T20Is, ODIs, and Tests, it wasn’t until December 6, 2021, that he assumed full-time captaincy across all formats.

The expectations were high, fueled by his remarkable success as the captain of the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Nonetheless, Rohit’s journey as India’s captain hadn’t been devoid of challenges and scrutiny.

Under Rohit’s leadership, India faced disappointment in the 2022 T20 World Cup, where they were eliminated by England. This defeat marked Rohit’s first tournament as the permanent captain of the Indian cricket team.

The 2023 Asia Cup served as a litmus test for Rohit Sharma and his team. India’s performance in the tournament had been decent, securing them a spot in the finals against Sri Lanka.

The statistics further highlight Rohit Sharma’s captaincy journey. He has led India in 34 matches, winning an impressive 25 of them, giving him a commanding win percentage of 72.87. However, what often gets scrutinized is his performance in high-stakes matches.

Rohit Sharma’s record as captain in finals was nearly impeccable, until the fateful ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final in June 2023. Leading India in ten major finals, including the IPL, CLT20, and Asia Cup, he had tasted victory in all but one. The WTC final against Australia was the lone exception, marking Rohit’s first loss as captain in a major tournament final.

This loss, however, should not overshadow Rohit Sharma’s remarkable achievements as a captain. His leadership was instrumental in securing five IPL titles for the Mumbai Indians (in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020), one Champions League T20 title in 2013, and two Asia Cup titles (in 2018 and 2023).

The earlier Asia Cup victory came in 2018, making him only the third Indian captain to achieve this feat. The other two captains with multiple Asia Cup titles for India are MS Dhoni (2 wins in 3 finals) and Mohammad Azharuddin (2 wins in 2 finals). This places Rohit Sharma in an elite club of captains who have achieved significant success in the Asia Cup.
