Vardy, 40, is suing Coleen Rooney, 36, for libel after she accused him of “leaking” false information about the Rooneys in October of this year.
Vardy told Watt in court-disclosed text messages: “Story… Danny Drinkwater was arrested […] He crashed his car while inebriated with two girls in it… Both are in the hospital, with one having shattered ribs x.”
Vardy clarified the car’s and location’s specifics by saying, “I want paying for this x.”
Drinkwater is a former colleague of Vardy’s spouse Jamie at Leicester City. He was arrested for drinking and driving in early 2019 after wrecking his Range Rover.
Watt stated that she had forwarded the story to Sun reporter Andy Halls. He “replied instantly,” she stated, implying that the publication was already aware of the situation.
Drinkwater, 32, a Reading loanee, pleaded guilty. As a result, he had to face 70 hours of unpaid community service.
Mrs Vardy had leaked information to The Sun either directly or through Watt “acting on her instruction or with her knowing approval,” according to Rooney’s lawyers.
Rooney is the 36-year-old wife of Derby County manager Wayne. She accused Vardy of leaking news following a months-long “sting operation”. In which she planted bogus material on her private Instagram account, later on publishing.
Vardy disputes the allegations and is suing Rooney for defamation of character. Rooney’s case will rest on her ability to show that Vardy was directly responsible for leaking of the articles from her Instagram page.
Rooney filed a court order yesterday ordering nine Sun journalists to hand over information of their conversations with Vardy regarding her.
Mrs Justice Steyn only issued a restraining order against Halls. She described the request for the remaining eight as a “fishing expedition.”
Watt had withdrawn her written evidence. She could not give oral testimony at the trial next month due to medical concerns, according to the High Court.
The whole libel trial, which is set to begin on May 9, is likely to last seven days.
