On Wednesday, August 10, 2022, Penguin Random House, the author’s publisher, announced the tragic news. Raymond passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 88. Briggs’ tales inspired adults and made children’s faces bright with smiles. The cause of Raymond’s passing has not been made public as of yet but it is said to be due to age related ailments.
The news was confirmed by Raymond’s family, which said, “We know that Raymond’s books were loved by and touched millions of people around the world, who will be sad to hear this news.” Drawings from fans—especially children’s drawings—inspired by his books were treasured by Raymond and pinned up on the wall of his studio. ”
The family continued that he lived a rich and fulfilling life and stated that he felt fortunate to have both his wife Jean and his partner of more than 40 years, Liz, in his life.
Soon after, The Snowman’s official Twitter account tweeted, “It is with great regret that we announce Raymond Briggs’ passing.” The Snowman, a groundbreaking picture book that introduced a daring and stunning innovation: a picture book without words, is Raymond’s best-known creation.
Raymond Briggs: Everything You Need to Know
On January 18, 1934, Raymond Briggs was born in Wimbledon, Surrey, England. He was a British cartoonist, author, illustrator, and creator of graphic novels. He was the child of milkman Ernest Redvers Briggs and housewife Ethel Bowyer, a former lady’s maid.
At the time, Raymond went to Rutlish School, a grammar school. From a young age, he showed a propensity for cartooning. Soon after, he enrolled at the Central School of Art to study typography and at the Wimbledon School of Art to study painting from 1949 to 1953. After some time, he applied to the University College London’s Slade School of Fine Art, where he eventually graduated in 1957.
The Snowman, a book without words with a television cartoon version and an annual Christmas musical adaptation, is where Raymond first gained notoriety. His other well-known novels are Ug: Boy Genius of the Stone Age, Fungus the Bogeyman, and Father Christmas from 1973. His net worth stood at $2 million.
