Guy passed away on Thursday after battling a protracted illness in recent years. His alma institution, the University of Southern Mississippi, broke the news of his departure in a statement, saying, “The Southern Miss family mourns today with the passing of Golden Eagle great Ray Guy, who died Thursday morning following a protracted illness.”
Guy, a 1949-year-old punter and placekicker, began his football career in college with the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, where he competed from 1968 to 1972. He was the first punter to ever accomplish the feat when the Oakland Raiders chose him in the first round of the NFL Draft in 1973.
In the first seven of his first eight NFL seasons, Guy was a pro bowler. Additionally, he received three All-Pro awards. He amassed 1,049 punt scores and 44,493 punt return yards, ranking him 22nd in NFL history.
Ray Guy held the Raiders’ record for most punts made in a career.
Guy ranked first in the NFL for gross punt average three different times. Guy was referred to as “the best that ever played that position” by the late Raiders head coach John Madden. The football player was named to the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team as a result of his illustrious career.
He also belonged to the 1970s All-Decade Team and the AFL-NFL All-Star Team from 1960 to 1984. Guy was given a place in the College Football Hall of Fame, the Georgia, Mississippi, and National High School Sports Halls of Fames, in addition to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In 2008, he was admitted to the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. The Ray Guy Award is given each year to the greatest punter in college football by the Greater Augusta Sports Council, which was founded in 2000. Several well-known football figures paid respect to the punter in the wake of the devastating news.
Guy was married to Beverly Guy and the couple has two children, Ryan and Amber. On August 14, 2011, Guy filed for bankruptcy and was forced to put up his Super Bowl rings for auction whcih brought in $96,216, exceeding the upper estimate of $90,000. Ray’s net worth stood at $3 million.
