Citing concerns over the alleged targeting of Muslims and religious minorities by Modi’s government, some Democrats are taking a stand against what they perceive as repression of religious freedom. The latest addition to this boycott is Rashida Tlaib, a Muslim Congresswoman representing the US Democratic Party.

Taking to Twitter, Tlaib wrote,

It’s shameful that Modi has been given a platform at our nation’s capital—his long history of human rights abuses, anti-democratic actions, targeting Muslims & religious minorities, and censoring journalists is unacceptable. I will be boycotting Modi’s joint address to Congress.

Tlaib’s declaration lends support to the increasing group of Democratic party members who boycott Modi’s joint speech to Congress in protest of these problems. Who is Rashida Tlaib?

Rashida Tlaib is an American congresswoman. She has been in the news because she recently announced her decision to boycott PM Modi’s speech to the joint session of the US Senate and House.

She was born on 24 July 1976 in Detroit. Her parents are Palestinian immigrants who moved to the USA. She is the eldest of 14 siblings.

Rashida Tlaib did her schooling at Harms, Bennett Elementary, and Phoenix Academy and eventually finished it at Southwestern High School in Detroit. Later, she attended Wayne State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. She subsequently got her Juris Doctor from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2004. She was admitted to the bar council in 2007.

She married Fayez Tlaib. The couple becomes the parents of two sons named Adam and Yousif. However, they got divorced. Since then, she has often referred to her as a single mother.

She is currently 46 years old and is a Muslim by religion.

His career

After working as a lawyer for a while, Rashida Tlaib entered politics. She began working in government in 2004 as a summer intern for State Representative Steve Tobocman. She later joined his staff when he became Majority Floor Leader. Encouraged by Tobocman, Tlaib ran for his seat in 2008 and won the primary and general elections with solid support.

Tlaib made history while serving in the Michigan State House of Representatives as one of the country’s 10 Muslim lawmakers. She joined the Michigan legislature as one of the first Palestinian Americans and the second Muslim.

Rashida Tlaib worked at the Sugar Law Center, a Detroit-based charity that offers workers’ legal assistance after she left the state Senate.

She ran for the 13th congressional district of Michigan’s U.S. House of Representatives in 2018. She won the Democratic primary and became the first Palestinian-American woman elected to Congress, alongside Ilhan Omar, one of the first two Muslim women in Congress.

Regarding the use of campaign money for personal expenses, Tlaib was the subject of a House Ethics Committee inquiry in 2019. The investigation resulted in a directed refund of $10,800 in 2020. Tlaib was reelected in 2020 and 2022 despite obstacles.
