The Albanian Football Federation released a statement on Saturday announcing the death of 28-year-old former Ghanaian attacker Raphael Dwamena, who was playing for a local team in Albania.

Dwamena was competing for Egnatia in a matchup with Partizani. He lost consciousness, and the physicians sent him to the hospital after administering first aid with him dying on 11 November, 2023. The Albanian Football Federation stated:
Despite the immediate intervention of specialist doctors he unfortunately passed away.”
Further was said:
The AFL expresses its deepest condolences to the Dwamena family and the Egnatia club for this great loss that has shocked the entire Albanian football community.”
The federation cancelled Saturday’s game and postponed all of this week’s scheduled games in Albania.
Raphael Dwamena’s cause of death
Dwamena collapsed in the 23rd minute of the game. He passed away while travelling to Kavajë Hospital after experiencing cardiac arrest.

A cardiac issue was identified in 2017 for Dwamena. His implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), which allowed his club to monitor his heart during games, was surgically placed in January 2020 when he was a student at Levante UD.
