Prediction
On Thursday, the group round of the 2022 ATP Finals will begin with Rafael Nadal taking on Casper Ruud.
After falling to Taylor Fritz in straight sets, Nadal needed to defeat Felix Auger-Aliassime in order to have a chance of advancing past the group round. In the opening set’s first game, the Spaniard had a handful of break points but couldn’t take advantage of them. In the seventh game of the set, he was given two more chances but once again missed.
Instead of making the same error, Auger-Aliassime broke Nadal’s serve in the following game. The Canadian then finished serving the set to win the match. In the second set, he got a break early and went up 3-1. The former World No. 1 had a chance to recommence serving, but he squandered it. Auger-Aliassime quickly finished the game to win 6-3, 6-4 as Nadal was unable to gain any ground. The Spaniard is no longer eligible to play in the semifinals as a result of this defeat.
On the other hand, Ruud defeated Auger-Aliassime to start his ATP Finals campaign, and in his subsequent group match, he faced Taylor Fritz. He got off to a fast 3-0 lead to get the game started. To win the first set, the Norwegian maintained a lead until the very end. Early in the second set, Ruud faced three break points but held serve by fending them off. After that, the pair stayed quite strong on serve. The 23-year-old had a chance to tie the score at 5-5 with a game point, but Fritz broke his serve and won the set to force a tiebreaker.
It entered a tie-break because neither player was able to break serve in the final set. Fritz fought back to tie the score at 6-6 despite Ruud having a 5-1 lead and even a few match points. The Norwegian then took the next few points to win the match 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(6) and advance to the semifinals.
The Spaniard gave Auger-Aliassime a good fight, but a few mistakes at bad times cost him the game. Despite this, Nadal is far from at his best because of his inconsistent serve and terrible backhand. Just in time to defeat Fritz, Ruud improved his performance. Again, his serve came in handy, and he displayed impressive court coverage. He did a good job mixing up his shots as well. Given their respective records, it is unlikely that the Norwegian will lose this contest.
