With his 6-4 victory over Mark Selby, Hossein Vafaei eliminated Selby from the Cazoo UK Championship for the second consecutive year. As a result, seven of York’s top 16 seeds were eliminated in the first round.

With a break of 80, Vafaei got things going quickly. Selby then tied it up with a run of 100. Vafaei regained the lead in the third frame by skillfully converting a double to a corner baulk. The following two were split, and after Vafaei’s 119 placed him in front 4-2, Selby retaliated with a 129 to reduce the gap. Selby had a 23-0 lead in frame eight, but Vafaei nailed another cunning double that put him in position for a break of 88 to take the frame 5-3. Selby dominated the ninth and then missed opportunities to force a decider in the tenth.
As a result of being stuck in a snooker on the last yellow, he gave Vafaei the opportunity to clear to the pink and secure the victory. On the opposite table, Shaun Murphy defeated David Gilbert in a hard-fought battle, 6-5, to go to a match against Judd Trump, probably the match of the second round.
Judd Trump defeated Xiao Guodong 6-5 in a tense four-hour match at the Cazoo UK Championship. Trump was not at his best in York and committed a number of unforced errors, but he seized his opportunity at the vital moment to secure a match against Shaun Murphy in the round of 16. With top breaks of 73, 83, and 66, Jack Lisowski defeated Xu Si 6-1 to advance quickly to the second round. These results mean that, Jack Lisowski will face Hossein Vafaei in Round of 16 tie.

Prize Money Pool Distribution at 2022 UK Championships
The 2022 UK Championships’ prize pool has increased from £1,009,000 to £1,205,0000, and the winner will now get $250,000 in cash rather than £200,000. The second-place finisher in the tournament will take home £100,000 in cash, but the semifinal losers will only get £50,000. Following their shocking elimination in the first round, Mark Selby and David Gilbert will each get $10,000.
