Despite having an ankle ailment during her CWG 2022 campaign, Sindhu defeated Canadian Michelle Li in the women’s singles final and won.
What did she say?
She reported that it was a little challenging for her to play the final with the injury because her foot was in agony the entire time after she returned to India. The satisfaction of being able to represent the nation on a stage this size kept her encouraged and driven to endure all the suffering.
She added that missing out on the gold medal in the previous two events meant that capturing it at the Commonwealth Championship was crucial for her. In the semi-final of the Glasgow CWG, Sindhu fell to Michelle Li and had to settle for bronze, while in the final of the Gold Coast CWG, the shuttler fell to fellow countrywoman Saina Nehwal and had to accept silver.
The support from fans has been constant.
She had a lot of individuals vouching for me from Day 1 of the Birmingham Games throughout the competition. “Sindhu Sindhu” always inspires her to the finest level. She truly liked it and it gives her the biggest boost of energy. That type of encouragement provided her confidence. She was in the game zone, so she blocked out the discomfort and concentrated on winning the game to make everyone pleased.
After defeating Maldivian Fathimath Nabaaha Razzaq in the Round of 23 by a margin of 2-0, Sindhu quickly advanced to the championship match. Earlier, to proceed to the next round of the women’s singles competition, Sindhu overcame Malaysia’s Jin Wei Goh 2-1 in the quarterfinal and defeated Uganda’s Husina Kobugabe 2-0 in the Round of 16. She easily defeated Jia Min Yeo of Singapore 2-0 in the quarterfinal to secure a place in the championship match.
