Interestingly, at the other end are four clubs who actually managed to make a profit in sales this season. Brighton have a net spent of -£105.60m following sales of players like Marc Cucurella, Yves Bissouma and Leandro Trossard.

Man City on the other hand made a profit of £62.76 million from selling the likes of Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko. Leicester also managed to make a profit of £23.5 million after selling Wesley Fofana last summer. Meanwhile Everton also made a profit of a little over £18 million after selling Anthony Gordon to Newcastle.

Premier League record-breaking spendings

Tim Bridge, who is the lead partner in Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, stated:

The record spending by Premier League clubs this season is beyond anything that we’ve seen before.

Premier League clubs have outspent those within the rest of Europe’s ‘big five’ leagues by almost four to one in this transfer window, allowing them to hold on to their key players, while attracting top-talent from overseas.

Bridge also shared his concern about the results of the transfer season regarding the decline in spending across the English football system. He stated that this could become a growing concern for the EFL members and also instigate further debates surrounding even distribution of finances among clubs.
