According to a formal statement from his lifelong companion, Anne Marie Macari, which was made public on Saturday by publisher WW Norton, Stern, the first poet laureate of New Jersey, passed away on Thursday at Calvary Hospice in New York City.

Who Was Gerald Stern?
Gerald Stern was a well-known American poet, essayist, and educator. He has been in the news because he passed away recently.
His full name was Gerald Daniel Stern. He was born on February 22, 1925, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His mother’s name is Ida Barach Stern, and his father’s name is Harry. They were Jewish immigrants who came to America in 1905 from Poland and Ukraine, respectively.
He did his schooling at Taylor Allderdice High School. Later, he received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pittsburgh. Later, he graduated from Columbia University with a Master of Arts.
He later moved to Europe after receiving his master’s degree to pursue Ph.D. studies at the University of Paris. However, he didn’t finish it. He served in the Army Air Forces from 1946 to 1947.
In 1952, he married Patricia Miller. Together, they have two kids named Rachel and David. The couple split up in the 1980s. During the final 25 years of his life, he shared a household with poet Anne Marie Macari and split his time between Miami Beach, Florida, and New York City.
He passed away at the Calvary Hospice in New York City on October 27, 2022. When he passed away, he was 97 years old.
His Career
Gerald Stern published four books of essays as well as twenty poetry collections. In addition, at Temple University, the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Raritan Valley Community College, and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he taught literature and creative writing.
He served as an esteemed poet-in-residence and faculty member for the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in poetry program at Drew University from 2009 until his passing.
He was a nominee for the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1991 for “Leaving Another Kingdom: Selected Poems” and won the National Book Award for Poetry in 1998 for “This Time: New and Selected Poems.”
He was chosen by Governor Christine Todd Whitman to serve as New Jersey’s first Poet Laureate in 2000.
