The former Liverpool man revealed that it was Steven Gerrard who convinced him to move to Villa Park. FC Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho finished a loan move to Premier League club Aston Villa until the end of the 2021-22 season on Tuesday. He moves back to the Premier League after 4 years, a period during which he moved from Liverpool to FC Barcelona for a record fee of 146 million Euros.
Unfortunately, the Brazilian was unable to strike a chord with Barca’s style of play which saw him move to Bayern Munich on loan for the 2019/20 season. He managed to win the treble with the German Giants, in addition to being a part of the squad that humiliated the Catalans by scoring 8 goals in the Champions League quarter finals.

Philippe Coutinho has completed his move to Aston Villa and even lit up Villa Park in his debut last night against Manchester United where he provided and assist and found the back of the net just 14 minutes after coming off the bench.
The agreement for Coutinho also includes an option to buy clause after his 6 month loan move is over. Aston Villa will be paying the main part of Coutinho’s salary so that Barcelona are able to register their new signing Ferran Torres.
The 29-year old midfielder disclosed that his former teammate Steven Gerrard was a “key factor” behind his decision to move to Aston Villa this summer. Coutinho apparently had long talks with Stevie G during which the former Rangers manager spoke of the club’s goals, aspirations and ambitions which convinced Coutinho to pack up and move to Birmingham.
Philippe Coutinho- Salary Pay-Cut At Barcelona
Barca legend and head coach confirmed that Coutinho had agreed to lower his salary and Villa now have the option to buy the midfielder for 33 million pounds at the end of the season. It was originally believed that the Premier League club were paying somewhere between 50% to 85% of Coutinho’s wages with Barca paying the rest.
But Xavi revealed that the player had agreed to take as much as a 35% pay cut before moving to England, which means that it would only be Aston Villa who will be paying him. Coutinho’s decision to lower his salary speaks volumes about his intention to leave Barcelona after a dry spell at the club.
Aston Villa are paying close to 125,000 pounds a week for Coutinho’s wages till the end of the season. His original Barcelona contract which expires in 2023, earned him around 20 million euros a year. He had made the move to the club for 146 million euros from Liverpool
