Prediction

At the San Diego Open on Monday, American Louisa Chirico defeated fellow countrywoman Alison Riske-Amtritraj in a thrilling comeback to win a WTA-level main-draw match for the first time since 2017.

The 26-year-old was a promising young player who made a splash in 2016 by qualifying for the semifinals of the WTA 1000 Mutua Madrid Open at age 19. She later reached a career-high ranking of No. 58 before suffering a potentially career-ending shoulder injury that forced her to sit out for 18 months.

Chirico once more produced a statement performance as a qualifier at this week’s West Coast WTA 500 competition: The now-World No. 196 player pulled off one of the comebacks of the season after falling behind her higher-ranked compatriot 6-1, 4-0, and then by a break in the third set. Her score was 1-6, 7-5, 7-6. (5). At 4-4 in the final set, she was down 0-40 on serve but managed to hold on.

Riske never faced a match point and only served once to win the match, at 5-4 in the second set.
Chirico’s last WTA main-draw victory occurred on the clay courts of Gstaad, Switzerland, five years ago. She will face No. 2 seed Paula Badosa as compensation for her 2 hour, 53 minute chase effort while her next opponent, who is a Spaniard received a second round bye.

Badosa has not played her best tennis in the lead-up to the match, but her strong serve and steady baseline hitting make her a formidable opponent. Her capacity to return some of the powerful first serves that Badosa, who employs them to great effect, makes, will also be crucial as she enters the match being a heavy favourite.
