A leading Pakistani journalist who had earlier this year been booked by the nation’s security services on suspicion of sedition and spreading “anti-state” propaganda was shot dead in Kenya, according to his wife.

Arshad Sharif, 49, a former ARY TV reporter and TV host who was well-known for his proximity to Imran Khan, the former prime minister, had moved to Kenya in order to flee from sedition charges. On Monday, Javeria Siddique, Sharif’s wife, confirmed his passing on Twitter.
Taking to Twitter, she said,
I lost friend, husband and my favourite journalist today, as per police he was shot in Kenya. Respect our privacy and in the name of breaking pls don’t share our family pics, personal details and his last pictures from hospital. Remember us in ur prayers (sic).
Since the news of his death was made public, it went on to become one of the most hotly debated news not only in Pakistan but also in the whole world with many people blaming Pakistan’s Army and government for his assassination.

Who Was Arshad Sharif?
Arshad Sharif was a well-known Pakistani journalist. He has been in the news because he was assassinated in Kenya when he was in exile after Pakistan security services booked him on the charges of sedition.
He was born in Karachi, Pakistan, on February 22, 1973. His father was a commander of the Pakistan Navy whose name was Muhammad Sharif TI(M) TK. He also had a brother named Ashraf Sharif, who passed away in a vehicle accident in 2011. Ashraf Sharif was also a commander in the Pakistani Army.
After doing his schooling at a local school, Arshad Sharif did his bachelor’s in journalism from Gordon College, Rawalpindi. Later, he attended Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad where he earned his Master of Science in Public Administration degree. After this, he attended Ulster University in Ireland where he did MA in media studies.
His wife’s name is Javeria Siddique she is also a well-known journalist in Pakistan. He was the father of 5 kids.
He died on 23 October 2022 in Kajiado, Kenya. At the time of his death, he was 49 years old.
His Career
While still a student, Arshad Sharif started his freelance journalism career in 1993. His first position in the media was with the monthly magazine Pulse. In 1999, he worked as a managing editor, reporter, and columnist. The News hired Arshad Sharif in 1999, while Daily Dawn hired him in 2001.
He specialized in defense and international affairs and covered conflicts in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas. From London, Paris, Strasbourg, and Kiel, he provided news coverage for prominent Pakistani news agencies.
His program Power Play debuted on ARY News in 2014. In his capacity as “Director of News,” Sharif oversaw AAJ News and Dunya TV. In 2011, he was Dawn News’ Bureau Chief.
He was the recipient of an Agahi Award in 2012. The 2016 Investigative Journalist of the Year Award went to Sharif as the host and Adeel Raja as the producer for the program Powerplay. Agahi’s Peoples’ Choice Awards: Favorite Current Affairs Anchor – Male went to Sharif in 2018.
Cause Of Death Of Arshad Sharif
On October 23, 2022, local police in Kajiado, Kenya, shot and murdered him. However, on social media, there was speculation that he had been murdered despite the Kenyan police’s description of the gunshot as a “mistaken identity” incident.
The Kenyan Independent Police Oversight Authority declared an inquiry into Sharif’s passing on October 24.
