The protagonist of the movie, Florence’s character Alice, thinks the town’s mayor, Chris’ character Frank, is hiding a deadly secret from all of the locals.
After disclosing in an interview with Interview Magazine that Chris’ persona was based on an “insane man, Jordan Peterson, who is this pseudo-intellectual,” the film’s director Olivia broke down with well-known Canadian clinical psychologist and author Jordan.
Since then, this whole episode has become a hot topic of conversation on various social media platforms, with many people trying to find out more about it. So, here’s what we know about it:
What Happened Between Olivia Wilde And Jordan Peterson?
Olivia’s interview with Maggie Gyllenhaal for Interview Magazine was published early in September. After the director’s remarks about Canadian speaker Jordan, the interview sparked a discussion on Twitter.
Chris’ character was based on the 60-year-old novelist, Olivia said while discussing her actors and their responsibilities in the movie. She said,
We based that character on this insane man, Jordan Peterson, who is this pseudo-intellectual hero to the incel community.
You’re aware of the Incels? Before defining the phrase as “basically disenfranchised, mostly white men, who believe they are entitled to sex from women,” Olivia asked Maggie,
You’re aware of the Incels?
The filmmaker, 38, expanded on her remarks and said,
And they believe that society has now robbed them—that the idea of feminism is working against nature, and that we must be put back into the correct place.
She added,
Jordan Peterson is someone that legitimizes certain aspects of their movement because he’s a former professor, he’s an author, he wears a suit, so they feel like this is a real philosophy that should be taken seriously.
Incel is defined as “a person (often a guy) who considers himself involuntarily celibate and typically exhibits strong hatred and hostility against others who are sexually active” by Merriam-Webster’s dictionary.
Jordan retaliated against Olivia a few days after her interview was released. The professional psychologist said to the National Post,
Now, (Chris) has a reputation as quite an attractive man … so that could be worse.
He added,
I also hope that Chris Pine at least does the sartorial splendor of my very formal public wardrobe justice as he pillories me in the latest bit of propaganda disseminated by the woke, self-righteous bores and bullies who now dominate Hollywood.
To clarify the record, Jordan said,
I am, currently — just to set the record straight — professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, which among those not pseudo-intellectual themselves still constitutes professor and a member there of a department of psychology which is in the top 15 such departments worldwide.
Jordan opened up about Olivia’s comments on the show Piers Morgan Uncensored
Jordan recently spoke on Piers Morgan Uncensored and discussed Olivia’s “insane” remarks.
While rolling his eyes, Jordan said,
Sure, why not. People have been after me for a long time because I have been speaking to young men, what a terrible thing to do.
He started getting emotional and said,
I thought the marginalized were supposed to have a voice?
He added,
God, you know. It’s very difficult to understand how demoralized people are, and certainly many young men are in that category.
He went on to say,
And you get these casual insults, these ‘incels’ – what does it mean? It’s like these men, they don’t know how to make themselves attractive to women – who are very picky and good for them.
Explaining his position on the subject, he said,
Women, like, be picky. That’s your gift, man. Demand high standards from your man. Fair enough. But all these men who are alienated it’s like, they’re lonesome and they don’t know what to do and everyone piles abuse on them.
