De Vries will lead the first practise for Williams in Spain.
Nyck de Vries, the Formula E world champion, will drive in Williams’ first practise session in Barcelona on Friday, replacing Alex Albon. The 2019 Formula 2 winner will take part in the first practise session on Friday morning, marking his first official F1 session.
De Vries is the first ‘young driver’ to be named to take part in a practise session in 2022. This year’s regulations require all ten F1 teams to run junior drivers in practise at least twice during the season.
De Vries expressed gratitude to Williams for allowing him to drive the FW44 on Friday. The decision to run De Vries comes after Williams CEO Jost Capito said that he was considered for a potential racing seat in 2022, but the team instead signed Alex Albon to the seat.
De Vries, a former McLaren youngster, left the team in 2019 to pursue a connection with Mercedes. De Vries has conducted two prior days of F1 testing for McLaren, most recently during the post-season test in Abu Dhabi last December, in addition to racing for the Mercedes EQ Formula E team and winning the series title in 2021.
