Only the top four players remain in contention for first place, with Magnus knowing that a classical win with the black pieces against Veselin Topalov will guarantee him a fourth consecutive Norway Chess title, regardless of what happens elsewhere.

It’s noteworthy that Mamedyarov is pitted against Radjabov, a fellow countryman. Vishy Anand will play Black against Aryan Tari, while Maxime Vachier-Lagrave will play White versus Anish Giri. If any players are tied for first place, a playoff will be held consisting of two 3+2 blitz games will be played.

The matches begin at 5 p.m. local time every day and end at 9:30 p.m. local time. Round Nine will be the final round of 2022 Norway Chess and matchups will begin at 8:00 a.m. PT/5:00 p.m. CET on June 10th. Tournament Format, Rules, and Prize Money Pool

The Norway Chess Championship began from May 31 and is scheduled to run till June 10, 2022. A single round-robin competition with a 10-second increment after move 40 and a 120-minute time limit is held for ten players. Instead of one point for a win, the scoring system is three points. If the game is deadlocked, the players will play an Armageddon game, in which the winner will receive 1.5 points and the loser will receive one.

As a reward for the players, a mouthwatering amount of 2.5 million Norwegian kroner will be awarded among the players based on their final positions. The tournament’s complete schedule, pairings, standings, and results is available here.

After amazing drama in the penultimate round, Magnus Carlsen leads Shakhriyar Mamedyarov by 0.5 points going into the last day of Norway Chess 2022. Vishy Anand, in a nearly equal position, blundered into mate-in-2 and quit before Mamedyarov could notice the error. Magnus was down and out against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in both the classical and Armageddon games, but he managed to not only survive but also win the mini-match.

In Round 8, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Anish Giri won all three points in classical chess, while Magnus Carlsen, Veselin Topalov, and Teimour Radjabov pocketed 1.5 points in Armageddon. Fans are looking forward to seeing the players on the last day of the competition because of the predicament at the top of the scoreboard. On Friday, June 10, at 8:00 a.m. PT/5:00 a.m. CET, Round 9 will begin.

Prize Money

The total prize pool for the tournament is 2,500,000 NOK, with the winner receiving 750,000 NOK and the runner-up receiving 400,000 NOK. Participants with the same number of points will be awarded the same amount of money. This does not apply to the first prize, though.
