A South African teacher Nomaqocwa Blackie, who went to China to teach English, was found dead in her apartment in Shanghai
On Monday, April 18, 2022, a lady who went to China in 2017 to teach English was discovered dead in her Shanghai apartment. Nomaqocwa Blackie has been confirmed as the victim.

Chinese police and her South African friend and coworker Abongile Mboto discovered her dead on the floor close to her bed.
Blackie was discovered dead in her residence in Shanghai, China’s financial capital, on the same day that her family had been desperately attempting to contact her after failing to do so the day before. So, let’s find out more about her:
Who Was Nomaqocwa Blackie?
Nomaqocwa Blackie was a 29 years old South African English teacher from Motherwell in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape. She was commonly known as “Noma” by her close ones. She went to China in 2017 to teach English in a public school.
She was found dead on the floor next to her bed by Chinese police and her South African colleague and friend, Abongile Mboto. Her relatives had attempted unsuccessfully the day before to contact her but were unable to do so.
The Blackie family would hold prayer sessions on Sunday afternoons at 17:00. The family had Zoom prayer sessions every Sunday, which helped them to keep in touch with one another. The family attempted to contact Noma on Sunday evening but were unable.
Pumza Thuse, Blackie’s friend and colleague in Shanghai, was concerned when Noma failed to submit her learning material video at the school where they both taught English. That’s when he along with Chinese Police went to her apartment and found her dead.
Arthur Blackie, Blackie’s younger brother, claimed the family is still in talks with the Department of International Relations and Co-operation (DIRCO) about repatriating her remains.
Her Death Cause
The South African consul-general in Shanghai was informed of Blackie’s death, according to DIRCO spokeswoman Clayson Monyela. The authorities are still investigating her death, so it’s unclear how she died.
Clayson Monyela said,
The division is rendering the required consular help to the family. As consistent with the concept of consular confidentiality and for the sake of the privateness of the family, DIRCO I’m not in a place to proportion private information with the media.
