Some players could be seen with their girlfriends in the popular snapshot, and as usual, Twitter users saw some interracial connections there and brought it up for discussion.

New York Knicks Holiday Picture With Mostly White WAGs Goes Viral

On Tuesday night, a picture shared on Twitter appeared to show members of the NBA’s New York Knicks squad with their apparent significant others allegedly at a professional basketball organization’s holiday party, fuelling a long-running discussion regarding interracial relationships.

The image was shared by the “New York Basketball” Twitter account, which is unrelated to the NBA team New York Knicks. It showed six players, each of whom was positioned in front of a woman. A straightforward caption for the tweet reads, “Knicks holiday party last night.”

In a flash, the tweet gained traction.

The tweet rapidly went viral, receiving almost 32400 likes as of Wednesday morning. Nearly 8600 other tweets cited the image and included offensive comments about the interracial relationships seen in the picture.

On the surface, the tweet appeared to be standard fare for the Christmas season, which is usually full of events like this at work where spouses and significant others are asked to participate in the festive corporate celebrations. However, given that this is Twitter—the uncontrolled, rising madness that can and frequently does enable unjustified criticism and much worse—things swiftly took a terrible turn.

The audience’s response to the photo was mixed.

In response to viewing the images of numerous interracial partnerships, the comments to the photo erupted with both defensive and angry responses. The majority of the comments on the picture, in typical Twitter form, were criticising wealthy Black professional players posing with white ladies.

However, the individual who made those comments didn’t appear to have looked closely enough to observe Knicks reserve forward Svi Mykhailiuk, who was standing next to a Black woman. The only person in the picture who was seen standing behind a Black woman was the white player who was born in Ukraine.

Ironically, Mykhailiuk’s choice to date a Black woman drew praise from a number of people despite tweets attacking the Black athletes for their relationships with white women. It was the normal Twitter double standard.
