Whitlock, the home favorite and lone representative from the Oceanic region to win in Wollongong, stole the stage on the opening night of the £60,000 tournament by defeating Van Gerwen. In order to commemorate defeating Van Gerwen for the fifth time in a row, Australia’s World Cup hero Whitlock, who last week overcame James Wade in Townsville, took down another significant opponent.
In an exciting final-leg shootout, Michael Smith defeated Australian number one Damon Heta thanks to a fantastic performance. The first ten legs went with throw despite Smith consistently outscoring Heta, but the pressure eventually paid off as Smith smashed in a 12-darter in the decider to secure his place in the quarterfinals.
With a commanding victory over Koha Kokiri, Price, who came in second in Queensland, quickly proceeded to Saturday’s quarterfinal clash. The winner of the Women’s World Matchplay will face the Welshman in the round of eight after Fallon Sherrock emerged victorious by narrowly defeating Mal Cuming.
James Wade also achieved success in this year’s tour Down Under by defeating Gordon Mathers, a semifinalist in Queensland the previous weekend, in a thrilling comeback. Wade will now face top-seeded Dimitri Van den Bergh in the quarterfinals. Van den Bergh defeated Australian qualifier Raymond O’Donnell 6-3 to start his quest for a third World Series victory in 2022.
