Born on 24 December 1997 to proud parents Satish Kumar Chopra and Saroj Devi, his father was quick enough to find his talent and direct him on the right path. At a very young age, Neeraj had a bad habit of throwing pebbles on beehives which made his father very angry. He gave a javelin instead of a stone to Neeraj and asked him to throw that instead. This is how India got its very first Javelin Throw gold medalist.
