Tournament Format, Rules, and Prize Money Pool
Prior to the double round-robin of blitz in the format, the top 10 grandmasters play a rapid chess round-robin. Blitz and quick chess were included in this format with the intention of keeping viewers interested and making them excitedly await the games each day. Rapid chess matches were played over the first three days of the competition, and blitz games will now be played over Saturday and Sunday.
Over the course of the first three days, a ten-player single round-robin rapid chess competition was held with a time constraint of 25 minutes for all moves and a 10-second increment beginning with move one. There will be 18 rounds of 5+2 blitz played over the course of the final two days of the competition. The Zagreb tournament is poised to come down to the wire as Magnus Carlsen, Wesley So, and Jorden Foreest are all in contention for the title but it is unlikely that Magnus Carlsen will let go of his 1.5 point lead at the top. However, the Zagreb tournament is set for a suspenseful conclusion with 18 rounds of 5-minute blitz matches spread out across Sunday.

SuperUnited Croatia Grand Chess Tour 2022 Rapid & Blitz Chess Day 4 Results, Latest Standings, And Final Day Schedule
In the opening game of the blitz, Magnus Carlsen defeated Jorden van Foreest to match the Jorden’s point tally at the top after finishing the rapid section in Zagreb tied for second place and one point behind Jorden. Wesley So, who is 1.5 points behind Magnus after defeating him handily in their head-to-head matchup, poses the closest threat to Carlsen.
Maxime Vachier-Lagrave has scored 4/9 in the blitz section on Day 4, but the Frenchman had to come from so far behind to have any chance of winning. The other Frenchman’s performance was possibly the biggest surprise of the day. Silver medalist in the 2019 World Blitz Alireza Firouzja only managed 3.5/9, with his lone victory coming against Jorden in the last round.
In the overall standings, Magnus Carlsen is leading the pack with a total of 18 points while Wesley So sits second with 16.5 points. Meanwhile, rapid section winner Jorden van Foreest sits third with 16 points. The final day of the tournament will be played on Sunday and kick-off at 2:00 PM CEST.
