Due to the fame of Joey “Jaws” Chestnut and Takeru “The Tsunami” Kobayashi, the competition has recently attracted more public attention. Chestnut, who consumed 63 hot dogs in the 2022 competition, is the reigning men’s champion. Miki Sudo, who consumed 40 hot dogs in 2022, is the reigning female champion.
Since 1997, the competition has been authorised by Major League Eating (MLE), which is recognised by the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE). Only participants who are currently employed by MLE are eligible to enter the competition.
The approximately 20 competitors usually include the following:
- the current victor
- regional contestants that qualified for that season
- anyone winning one of the two wildcard spots (highest two average qualifier scores without taking first place in any qualifier)
- people invited by the MLE on a special invitation basis
