Predictionย
The semifinal of the 2022 Chennai Open 2022 will feature World No. 130 Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic taking on World No. 298 Nadia Podoroska of Argentina.
With a victory against the second-seeded Varvara Gracheva on Friday, Linda Fruhvirtova, 17, maintained her incredible run at the Chennai Open and advanced to her maiden tour-level semifinal. In the first set, the Czech player recovered from two break deficits before breaking again for the third time in the ninth game to win the opening set. In the second set, World No. 80 Gracheva quickly took a 0-3 lead, but Fruhvirtova mounted a strong comeback, winning six straight games to win the match 6-4, 6-3.
Fruhvirtova defeated Liang En-shuo in the first round after coming back from a set down, and fifth seed Rebecca Peterson in the round of 16 to improve her season record to 28-18. The World No. 130 has had a fantastic year. She made her WTA 1000 debut at the Miami Open, where she advanced to the fourth round, and made her Grand Slam debut at the U.S. Open, where she advanced to the second round. A career-first final appearance for the three-time ITF champion is now very likely.
Meanwhile, Podoroska dropped the first set for the second time in a row, but the Argentine battled back to keep her hopes of capturing a first WTA title alive. The Argentine has not appeared frequently this season after missing the first several games of the campaign due to injury. She returned in June, and since then, has finished in two semifinals and one ITF runner-up position. Prior to the Chennai Open, she had a tour record of 1-3, but a lot seems to have changed in India.
Podoroska defeated fourth-seeded Tatjana Maria in three sets after defeating Kyka Okamura of Japan in straight sets in the opening round. After getting broken three times by Eugenie Bouchard on Friday, the World No. 298 was outplayed by the Canadian. However, she made a strong start to the second set, broke Bouchard twice to take a 4-1 lead. The latter did recover their break, but Podoroska did not allow them to take another as she levelled the match at one set each.
Podoroska dominated the final set right away, breaking her opponent twice, and establishing a 3-0 advantage. Bouchard did recover a break, but the Argentinean quickly regained a two-break advantage and then sped to victory in two hours and 24 minutes, winning 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The 25-year-old is making her first appearance in the semifinals since reaching the French Open’s final four in 2020. Expect a competitive match because both players are in good shape and both are trying to reach their first final. Fruhvirtova has had a significant influence this season, and Chennai may be the next stop on her incredible run. The Czech should prevail in three.
