The 40-year-old is a World Cup winner and played a massive role in India winning 2007 T20 and 2011 ODI World Cup. Gambhir was not impressed with the Hero Worship culture in India for both tournaments’ victories. The southpaw meant that India shouldn’t be a team with a superstar but a superstar team itself. The way Indian fans hype up an Individual for a team victory is not something that Gambhir likes.
In the finals of both, the World Cups Gambhir played match-winning knocks. In an interview, Gautam said “It wasn’t Ms. Dhoni’s six which won us the 2011 World Cup it was a combine team effort.” He added saying Sachin Tendulkar the top scorer of our team Yuvraj Singh the man of the tournament, and many others made it possible.

In an interview with Indian Express the former Indian batsman bitter truths of Indian Cricket. “Don’t create monsters in the dressing room. The only monster should be Indian cricket, not an individual. Do you think that this whole hero worship chokes the next star to come up? Nobody has grown in that shadow. It was Mahendra Singh Dhoni earlier, it is Virat Kohli now,” says the veteran Indian cricketer.

In the last match of India’s Asia Cup campaign, Kohli made a ton after almost 3 years of drought. Everyone in the commentary box was praising Kohli for his 71st Ton and completely sidelined Bhuvi who bowled his career-best spell in the same game. Kohli’s pictures were all over social media whereas Bhuvi who had outstanding figures of 5/4 got minimal attention. Gambhir reflects back on this incident to give the example of his statement about the Hero Worship culture in India.
