Mother Ganga: The Lifeline of Sanatan Dharma

Mother Ganga: The Lifeline of Sanatan Dharma
Devi Sureshwari Bhagavati Gange Tribhuvanatarini taralatarenge Shankara-mauli-viharini vimale Mama matir astam tava padakamale॥ O Goddess Ganga, the sovereign of all divine beings! O purifier of the three worlds, flowing with ever-moving sacred waves! O pure one who dwells upon the matted locks of Lord Shiva! May my intellect ever remain established at your lotus feet. The word “Tribhuvanatarini” signifies that Mother Ganga is not merely an earthly river, but a divine power that liberates all three realms—earth, heaven, and the netherworld. Even the remembrance of Her dissolves ignorance and leads the soul toward purity. “Shankara-mauli-viharini” indicates that Mother Ganga resides upon the matted hair of Lord Shiva. This establishes Her not as a mere river, but as the embodiment of Shiva-Shakti and supreme divine purity. “Vimale” means absolute purity. This purity is not only physical but deeply spiritual, as Mother Ganga destroys sins, suffering, ignorance, and the fear of the cycle of birth and death.

Hence the Scriptures Glorify Her AS:

Namami Gange tava pada-pankajam Surasura-vandita-divya-rupam Bhuktim cha muktim cha dadasi nityam Bhava-anusaram sada naranam॥

Meaning

O Ganga! I bow to Your lotus feet, whose divine form is worshipped by both gods and demons. You bestow both worldly enjoyment and liberation upon beings according to their devotion.

The Glory of Ganga is Further Described in Scriptures:

Punati kirtita papam drishta sprishta prayacchati Avagadha cha pita cha punaty asaptamam kulam ॥
Meaning

Simply by chanting Her name sins are destroyed; by seeing Her one attains auspiciousness; by touching Her one gains merit; and by bathing or drinking Her waters, seven generations are purified.

In truth, in Bharatvarsha, Mother Ganga is not merely a river but the very soul of Sanatan Dharma. She is the living voice of the Vedas, the penance of sages, the hope of devotees, the liberation of ancestors, and the foundation of Indian culture.

Wherever Ganga flows, there is pilgrimage. Wherever Ganga flows, there is Dharma. Wherever Ganga flows, there is the gateway to liberation.

Even today, Ganga flows from the Himalayas, purifying the entire land of Bharat and filling countless hearts with devotion. However, in modern perception, She is often seen merely as a physical river or resource. In the Sanatan vision, She is consciousness itself, divine grace itself, and the very form of liberation.

The Objective of the Sanatani Ganga Foundation Is:

  1. To re-establish the Vedic and Puranic essence of Mother Ganga
  2. To revive devotion to Ganga in society
  3. To educate the younger generation about Her spiritual and cultural significance
  4. To establish Ganga conservation as a sacred duty
  5. To elevate Ganga from a “National River” to the “Soul of the Nation”
  6. It is our humble prayer that Mother Ganga, flowing from the Himalayas, continues to purify the entire land of Bharat and awaken devotion, purity, and liberation in every heart.
