The Detroit Pistons have reportedly found a new head coach. Dwane Casey, who spent five years as the head coach in Detroit, will be replaced by Monty Williams after reaching an agreement, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Williams spent the previous four years with the Phoenix Suns, leading them to an appearance in the NBA Finals in 2021, and receiving Coach of the Year accolades in 2022. Williams was fired after the Phoenix Suns fell in the second round of the playoffs.
According to Charania, Williams first let teams know he was interested in taking a year off, including the Pistons. The 51-year-old will become the highest-paid coach in NBA history thanks to an offer that Detroit brought to the table.

Williams and Troy Weaver, the general manager of the Pistons, have a strong friendship that began during their time together in Oklahoma City. Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren, and the rest of the Pistons’ youthful core will be taught by the former Suns coach, according to Williams.

Williams will receive $72 million over six years as part of his contract, according to the Charania and James L. Edwards III report.
Williams would reportedly receive a whopping $12 million yearly compensation under the rumoured agreement, making him the highest-paid coach in the league. With incentives and an option to extend for a further two years, that salary could increase to $100 million.
Williams’ contract is the most expensive coaching contract in NBA history, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, and it is worth $78.5 million over six years.
