It has been run since 1929 and is widely regarded as one of the most important and prestigious automobile races in the world, and is one of three races that comprise the Triple Crown of Motorsport, along with the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The track has been described as “an exceptional location of glamour and prestige.”

The Formula One event is typically held on the last weekend of May and is known as one of the largest weekends in auto racing because it takes place on the same Sunday as the Indianapolis 500 (IndyCar).

The race is held on a narrow course laid out in the streets of Monaco, with many elevation changes, tight corners, and a tunnel, making it one of the most difficult tracks in Formula One. Despite the relatively low average speeds, the Monaco circuit is a dangerous place to race because of the track’s narrowness, and the race frequently involves the intervention of a safety car. It is the only Grand Prix that does not adhere to the FIA’s mandated minimum race distance of 305 kilometres (190-miles) for F1 races.

Monaco Grand Prix: The fastest lap in MONACO history

The Monaco track has undergone some minor changes over the years, with each change resulting in a reset of the fastest lap time. The current layout of the track has been in use since 2015, when the left-hander at Tabac was slightly modified.

As a result, the record for the fastest outright lap in Monaco F1 history was set in 2019. Lewis Hamilton clocked a time of 1m:10.166s in his Mercedes to take pole position in qualifying, his second in the Principality.

Although it is one of three pole positions in the 1m:10 range, Hamilton’s effort is the fastest lap in Monaco F1 history.

The other times the pole-sitter has gone around Monaco in under 71 seconds are Daniel Ricciardo’s 1m:10.810 in 2018 and Charles Leclerc’s 1m:10.346 in 2021.

Record for Race Lap

Although pole position laps are generally faster than race lap records, F1 only counts race lap records. It follows that Hamilton also holds the fastest F1 race lap record in Monaco.

In 2021, while struggling to seventh place, Hamilton set the fastest ever race lap record in Monaco. He pitted for new tyres and ran 1m:12.909s. It surpassed Max Verstappen’s 2018 time of 1m:14.260s on his comeback drive from the back after crashing in FP3 and missing qualifying.
