Miss Universe history, organizers and more

The Miss Universe pageant started in 1952 to promote Catalina Swimwear, previously known as Pacific Knitting Mills. The idea came about after Miss America Yolanda Betbeze declined to model a bathing suit for Catalina Swimwear in 1951.

In response, the company decided to create its own pageant. Catalina Swimwear is also behind the Miss USA pageant, seen as a preliminary step to Miss Universe. The first Miss USA was Jackie Loughery in 1952, and the inaugural Miss Universe title went to Armi Kuusela of Finland the same year.

Back in 1952, the Miss Universe pageant began to promote Catalina Swimwear, which used to be known as Pacific Knitting Mills. The idea came up when Yolanda Betbeze, the winner of Miss America in 1951, didn’t want to model a swimsuit for Catalina Swimwear. So, the company decided to create its own beauty pageant.

Catalina Swimwear is also behind the Miss USA pageant, which is like a first step to Miss Universe. The first Miss USA in 1952 was Jackie Loughery from New York. And that same year, the very first Miss Universe was Armi Kuusela from Finland.

Miss Universe and Miss World are different mainly because of the people who started them. Miss World began in 1951, thanks to Eric Morley, also called Mr. World. Now, his wife, Julia Morley, runs Miss World.

They also have different parts in their competitions. Miss Universe has things like interviews with judges, showing off national costumes, swimsuits, evening gowns, and a final Q&A. On the other hand, Miss World has more parts, like a social media challenge, talent show, and sports.

People really like Miss Universe in Latin America, the United States, Canada, and the Philippines. Miss World, which started in the U.K., is more famous in Europe, Asia, and Africa

To join the Miss Universe competition, you need to be between 18 and 28 years old when your country’s competition starts. But from 2024 onwards, there won’t be an upper age limit.

You must also be a citizen of the country you’re representing. And here’s a cool thing: as of 2023, moms, married women, and those expecting a baby can take part!

If you have tattoos or had plastic surgery, that’s totally fine! In fact, in 2014, Miss Spain Desire Cordero became the first contestant to show a tattoo on the Miss Universe stage.

The Miss Universe competition kicks off with interviews where contestants wear swimsuits or athletic outfits and show off evening gowns. Then, during the live show, they announce the semifinalists.
