Mike Hammond was a British ice hockey player who was born on 21 February 1990, in Brighton, Brighton and Hove, United Kingdom. Prior to his death, Mike played for Nottingham Panthers of the Elite Ice Hockey League. He also played for the British national team. Mike tragically died yesterday, on 19 July 2023, following a tragic car crash.

At the time of his death, Mike Hammond was 33 years old and stood at a height of 1.78 m.

According to reports Mike Hammond died following a horrific crash near the village of Shawnigan Lake. The area is located on Vancouver Island. The crash was a single-vehicle accident and first noticed by law enforcement official after being called to the scene. According to police reports, Mike’s car ‘veered off the road’ before eventually crashing and dying on the spot.

Mike last played for the Nottingham Panthers in the Elite Ice Hockey League and also represented the GB national team several times. He has also previously played for German Oberliga side Hannover Scorpions and for teams in the United States, Canada, Denmark, and Scotland. Mike has previously represented Great Britain at the 2019 as well as 2021 IIHF World Championship. Hammond was also not just any player as he was the top scorer in Elite Ice Hockey League last season. He registered 90 points from just 62 appearances for Nottingham.
Notably, the forward was set to rejoin Glasgow Clan later this year. The Scottish outfit also came out to pay their tribute to the former star stating how the team are devastated to hear of the tragic news about Mike’s passing. The team stated that Mike was hugely popular during his time with them during the 2016/17 season and were looking forward to his return in 2023/24. The team further shared that their thoughts are with Mike’s family and his friends during this time of grief.
His current team Nottingham also posted their condolences:
The Panthers would like to send our thoughts to Mike’s family and friends at this very difficult time. Our thoughts too are with all his former team-mates and everyone at the club is thinking of Hammy and his family right now.”
Tributes come pouring in for Mike Hammond
Following the news about the tragic incident, various tributes have come pouring in for Hammond from all quarters. Aside from his current team, Ice Hockey UK have come out to pay tribute to Hammond, describing him as a ‘cherished’ member among their ranks.

Mike’s brother, Steve, also wrote on Facebook that he was “lost for words” following the sudden death of his sibling.
Dylan Machnee, one of Mike’s close friends also came out to express his shock on social media. Machenne and Hammond recently went out a vacation together in Vancouver Island. He wrote:
I always thought that the 4 of us would grow old and wise together. 30 years from now we’d do Christmas with the next generations of Hammond’s and Machnee’s, even though you and I may have just ended up the cool uncles.”
