In fact, it is not the first time that bands have chosen it as the name for an album. Unlike other bands that have used the title however, Metallica’s song, takes the meaning behind the phrase quite literally.

Metallica frontman James Hetfield explained about the song title saying:

The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible description around what kind of personality we are.

He further added how everyone grows up in a certain manner, which affects the way we lead our adult lives. Hetfield further explained that:

Lux Aeterna can be interpreted as a call to the listener to break away from such a set perception of ourselves and join with other disaffected souls to reach the eternal light of wisdom.

Lyrics Explained

The song starts with the line

Anticipation/ In domination/ A sea of hearts beat as one, unified/ Magnification/All generations/ Approaching thunder awaiting the light

The lines clearly states how a whole generation of people who were previously under domination is finally coming together as one and moving towards the real source of knowledge.

One part of the song goes:

Emancipation/ Kill isolation/ Never alone for the feelings alike/ Amplification/ Lightning the nation/ Never alive more/Than right here tonight.

These lyrics explain to the listeners how to open themselves and realise that there are other people who share the same feelings as them and that they are never truly alone.

Such thoughts are very relevant during these post-COVID times where people find themselves isolated from the outside world. People are so isolated nowadays that their cell phones or computers are their only connection with the outside world.

Metallica’s songs are known to carry a message for the disenfranchised and the disaffected. Their new song Lux Aeterna does the same. The song tries to reaches out to the inner voices that are never heard while asking them to connect together with people are just as isolated as them.
