The top three teams in the Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 and the hosts will qualify for the quadrennial event set to take place in Malaysia in December.
India secures crushing 18-0 victory over Chinese Taipei
The Indian national hockey team began their title defence at the Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 with a crushing 18-0 win over Chinese Taipei. The match took place at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex in Salalah, Oman on Wednesday.
India looked in strong from the very start with captain Uttam Singh (10’, 59’) opening the floodgates with his goal. Meanwhile, vice-captain Dhami Boby Singh (10’) scored India’s second goal in the same minute.
The rest of the goals came from Araijeet Singh Hundal (19’, 19’ 30’, 59’) who scored four goals, Angad Bir Singh scoring one (37’), Aditya Arjun Lalage (37’, 37’) scoring twice, Amandeep (38’, 39’, 41’) three and Yogember Rawat (60’) scoring one.
From the 18 goals, only three of India’s goals came off penalty corners. The first penalty goal was Sharda Nand Tiwari’s strike (11’) in the first quarter. The other two goals came in the fourth-quarter from Amir Ali (51’) and Chandura boby Poovanna (54’).
Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 Pool A standings
Following India’s win over Chinese Taipei, they are now on top of Pool A with three points and a +18 goal difference. Pakistan on the other hand, defeated Chinese Taipei 15-1 on Tuesday, and are second with a goal difference of +14. Japan are third on the points table after beating Thailand 7-1 in their opening match. This means that Thailand are in fourth place while Chinese Taipei are last in the five-team Pool A.
Meanwhile, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Oman, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan make up the teams in Pool B.
Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 upcoming matches
Following the recent match, the Indian hockey team will next face against Japan on Thursday. The side will then face arch-rivals Pakistan on Saturday and then Thailand on Sunday for the last league stage match. After the end of the league stage, the top two teams from each pool will qualify for the knockout semi-finals.
