On Saturday, rising Filipino star Mark Magsayo will face former 122-pound champion Rey Vargas at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, in an attempt to make the first defence of his WBC featherweight title. In January, Magsayo shocked the boxing community by defeating longtime champion Gary Russell Jr. Magsayo now aims to show that the battle with Russell wasn’t an anomaly.
When Vargas made his featherweight debut in November after an injury layoff, he defeated Leonardo Baez by a close margin. To win his title in 2017, the 31-year-old travelled to the UK and defeated previously unbeaten Gavin McDonnell in a decision. Following that, Vargas successfully defended his championship five times, defeating the likes of prominent challengers Oscar Negrete, Ronny Rios, and Azat Hovhannisyan. In July 2019, he defeated former world champion Tomoki Kameda in a unanimous decision to complete his sixth successful title defence.

When Magsayo defeated Gary Russell Jr. by majority decision on January 22 in Atlantic City, he put an end to the longest current title reign by a world boxing champion. Prior to the fight with Magsayo, Russell had held the WBC featherweight championship for almost seven years, but had only successfully defended it five times. The Filipino fighter, who is unbeaten, outpunched the American by a total of 150 to 59, including a 140 to 58 advantage in power blows landed.
