Rei Higuchi is a Japanese freestyle wrestler who was born on January 28, 1996, in Japan. Higuchi won a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in the menโs 57 kg division. He also won a gold during the 2022 World Wrestling Championships held in Belgrade, Serbia in the 61 kg event. He is currently competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics and is set to compete in the semi-finals against India’s Aman Sehrawat.

Career and achievements
Before competing at the senior level, Rei Higuchi won a gold in the 2012 Asian Cadets Championships in the 54 kg event. Three years later, Higuchi won the 2015 All Japan Tournament in December despite fracturing his right hand in October. ย The following year, Rei won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro in the 57 kg freestyle event.
He then competed at the Golden Grand Prix Ivan Yarygin 2017, where he won a bronze medal. That same year, he won another bronze at the 2017 Asian Championships in New Delhi. The following year, Rei won a gold at the 2018 Bucharest World U23 Championships.
Rei Higuchi then won a gold at the Belgrade 2022 World Championships, followed by another gold at Ulaanbaatar 2022. Higuchi then won a silver on September 18, 2023, in the 57 kg weight class at the 2023 World Wrestling Championships. Earlier this year, he won a gold at the Budapest 2024 Grand Prix, in the 57 kg event.
He is currently the second ranked wrestler in the world.
