Prediction
Alycia Parks started with Oksana Selekhmeteva and Anna-Lena Friedsam in the qualifiers reaching the first round of the tournament where she overthrew Karolina Pliskova to make it to the Round of 16 against Maria Sakkari, who received a second-round bye at Ostrava Open 2022.
Tuesday’s Agel Open opening round included a surprising upset by American qualifier Alycia Parks, who defeated former World No. 1 and local favourite Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 7-6(3).
Parks hit six aces during the game, while Pliskova, who is third on the circuit in aces this season, had none. Parks was able to win in one hour and 28 minutes thanks in part to the American’s strong serving, as she won 72% of her first-service points.
With 15 victories to one for Pliskova in the opening set, Parks completely dominated in the fixture. In the opening 27 minutes, Parks never encountered a breakpoint.
However, Parks really excelled in the second serve return for Pliskova, winning 8per centnt of those points (16 of 19). Parks ended up scoring all five of her break points in the match, finishing perfect 5-for-5. Her first victory over a Top 20 player came in Parks’ triumph over Pliskova, the World No. 19 player. Parks had only faced one other Top 20 player before, and that match ended in a loss to then-No. 4 Ons Jabeur in Berlin earlier this year.
As of right now, Parks is 2-2 in this season’s tour-level main-draw matches before Ostrava, Parks’ career-best win by ranking came against No. 46 Zheng Qinwen in Berlin. This was her previous main-draw victory this year.
Parks, 21, achieved the finest result of her brief career on Tuesday by surprising Pliskova in straight sets. After performing well in qualifying this weekend, the American will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of about 125th, and if she encounters Maria Sakkari in the wrong frame of mind, she may pull off another upset. The top-seeded Sakkari, 27, lost in straight sets to Mayar Sherif in the Emilia-Romagna Open final last Saturday. This was Sakkari’s third straight loss in a final, including coming in second place here in Ostrava last year.
The Greek should be able to complete the course in two laps at her best, but Parks’ top speed is still mostly unknown. Take Parks to win at least one of Sakkari’s most recent matches, which have frequently gone to three sets.
