In their 2023 Merdeka Cup semi-final tie against Malaysia, India conceded an early goal in the eighth minute owing to goal from Malaysian star Dion Cools. However, India restored parity in the 13th minute thanks to a goal from Naorem Mahesh Singh. In the 17th minute, Arif Aiman converted a penalty to make it 2-1 in favor of Malaysia. Towards the end of first-half, India faced another setback as Malaysia extended their lead to 3-1 thanks to a goal from Faisal.
To overcome their two-goal deficit, India started the second-half aggressively and were rewarded soon as Sunil Chhetri bagged a goal in the 51st minute. Although India created numerous big chances, Malaysian defense thwarted all attempts before scoring in the 59th minute through Corbin to restore their two-goal lead. Despite their best attempts, India failed to score more goals in the remaining period and succumbed to 2-4 defeat.
